CD Review: Katy Perry – Teenage Dream Capitol, !010

Toronto - One of the biggest releases of the summer came out on Tuesday, as Katy Perry`s sophomore effort "Teenage Dream" was released. She has already dominated the summer with her Snoopy Dog collaboration- California Gurls. Seeing how this is one of the biggest releases this year, it would be ignorant of us to not remark on it. Or something like that.

Teenage Dream

The sunkissed music video for this single reminds me of a more adult adaptation of Britney Spear`s second single, Sometimes. Both have people who are parked on a beach and just chilling. Do people do this? I don`t know. Friday Night

Usage of the term `Epic Fail` in the lyrics will finally have the song sound dated in a few years. Otherwise an early 80s influenced dance track with a classy Yacht Rock style Sax solo in the song. I think Katy Perry has a lot more fun then I do on Friday nights, where I eat Cheetos and play Man of Warcraft. California Gurls

The synth in the background reminds me of something Calvin Harris would produce. This is well the most overplayed song since Black Eye Pea`s I Gotta Feeling. I first view this was pretty good song when I first heard it, but then got turned off by it after someone pointed out Ke$ha`s Tik Tok is basically the like song. Still, it`s hella catchy and the fun feel of the call makes it a decent response to Jay-Z`s Empire Commonwealth of Mind. If it was truly representing California though, Katy would make some Mexican singing in it too.where`s George Lopez? Firework

Katy Perry asks if I always feel paper thin. The solution is no. There`s some nice string work here. This is clearly one of the tunes designed to read off Katy Perry`s voice, as the chorus is totally made for some serious belting. "After a hurricane, comes a rainbow". Ask FEMA if this is true, I say. The outro of "Boom Boom Boom, brighter then the Moon, Moon, Moon" makes me wonder if Katy has been taking songwriting tips from Brett Anderson circa 1999. Peacock

"I wanna see your peacock" sings Katy Perry in a strain that the B-52s would write if they were drunk and stupidified. The cheerleader chorus and overly suggestive lyrics easily hold this the worse entry in her album so far. This shit should be handed over to Fergie or something. Circle The Drain

An 80s hair metal riff highlights this strain about some girl who is going a drug addict boyfriend. Where`s the loyalty? This song has all the makings of an 80s rock hit. I anticipate the music video to feature red leather, big hair, lazers and a smoke machine. I bear no thought what Set the Drain means either. I am so uncool. The One That Got Away

Classic nostalgic innocent summer love that goes away track. I don`t know if Katy Perry would have always experienced this. Have you looked at her? Nice reference to Johnny Cash, who Katy Perry fans would likely think is the guy in "Dr Quinn, Medicine Women", the point their mothers made them watch five days ago. Still, this is a dreamy little tune I am sure teenagers will have crying parties to when their summer flings come to an end. E.T.

This song didn`t download properly, so I can`t hear to it. I guess it`s around the classic 1979 movie featuring Drew Barrymore and the alien. Has anyone been on the ET ride at Universal Studios? I think going on that once or twice when I was a kid. It was fairly good. Is it still there? Who am I Keep For?

Another 80s inspired ballad. Not often to say as I spent most of this track trying to get a youtube video of the ET Universal Ride. It was shut in 2003. For shame. Here`s the ride: Pearl

Electronic and synthy. One of the things I care about Katy Perry songs are that her lyrics are so easily absorbed "She used to be a pearl / can`t believe she`s become a case of herself" I no longer want to use brain power to flesh out the idea of the song. Instead, I can use that allocated brain power to do something great for society, like, find a remedy for cancer. If this was a Smiths song, Morrissey woulda veiled that under some obscure 40s era poem or something. I inquire if this is a call about Lindsay Lohan. "I woke up and grew warm and I can even go on" Pretty inspirational stuff here. Hummingbird Heartbeat

This song sounds like a lot of the early songs on this album. It`s all start to gel together. Is this a concept electro 80s pop album? I`m not so sure anymore. A hummingbird`s heart rate can reach 1260 beats per minute, by the way. Not Wish The Movies

This is the role of the concert when they cast out a grand piano , unveil a string section and Katy Perry can classy it up and talk a lay and the concert goers can put up their iphones in the air and carry it side by side

In conclusion, this was enough for a pop album. I don`t think Katy Perry is passing away anytime soon, so you might as well get used to her.
