Last week, we debuted Britney Spears' new track "Hold It Against Me".Shortly thereafter, the commonwealth group Bellamy Brothers announced that the call was a potential infringement on their 1979 song "If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Give It Against Me".
ou can now hear to that song below:MISS TLC SAYS: Here's the thing.Infringements and sample claims are exceedingly common in the music industry. This is in character because many producers, writers, and artists DO steal pieces of previously-recorded songs; but many times these claims are ultimately dismissed. As tenacious as the new creator can show that they had no link to the old song, and/or a jury finds that the similarity in the two songs is difficult to prove, it is overlooked. In the character of this Britney song, the air is not being addressed (which is easier to prove), and instead it's the lyrics that Bellamy Brothers are attacking. As mad as it may sound, writers have brought about claims for the silliest of similarities such as the pluck to Justin Timberlake's hit "My Love" having the same lyrics as another lesser-known act who had a call with the lyrics "My Love" in their hook. That's utterly ridiculous considering the language My Love are one of the most common combos in songs throughout the years. However, in this case, the lyrics are a bit more specific. The style of the country tune is somewhat similar to the snare of Brit's song (which is "If I said I wish your body now, would you hold it against me?"), but here's the thing - those lyrics are partly of a really popular cheesy/joke pick-up line.So personally I don't believe you can show that Britney (or her writers) took the line from the 1979 country hit, and instead coincidentally just chose to use the same premise for their songs.Either way, we shall see how this all plays out. What do you think?
